Having never entered a chilli sauce into any kind of competition before, we certainly did not expect to win, but this was exactely what happended at this years amazing Wessex Chilli Festival, orgainsed by Matt Simpson of Simpson Seeds in Horninghsam near Longleat - www.simpsonsseeds.co.uk.
The annual event held this year on 10th October in the Cheese and Grain hall in Frome attracted a good crowd, and it was this same crowd who were responsible for choosing their favoured sauce.
The competition took the form of 45 different commercial sauces. Each sauce was laid out along with its ingredients. There was however no reference to the manufacturer. This anonymous testing made the competition absolutely fair, with wacky labelling being unable to influence the tasters decision. Each punters was given a bead and this was used to cast their winning vote.
At the end of the day, Matt Simpson bravely stood on a chair and announced the winners. First prize was for our ever popular Fruity Chilli Sauce which is a mild product based on Sultanas and Ginger, making it absolutely perfect for application to cheese on toast!
Second prize was awarded to Chillies Galore for their Inferno sauce and 3rd place went to a new comer who was actually at his first ever chilli event with a pineapple and mango based sauce named Angel Witch from Calderiummm...
So, hopefully we will have similar success next year at the Wessex Chilli Festival, although the pressure to maintain standards has caused a few sleepless nights already!
